Motivation for participation
The topic of “books to comfort adults and children who are alone” has been gaining traction in the publishing world in recent years. At the Bologna Children's Book Fair in 2024, during meetings with various international publishers, the topic of the “lonely child” was particularly prominent. This problem is becoming an important social issue not only for children, but also for modern adults. In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of works featuring characters with ADHD, poor literacy skills, or difficulty connecting with others, which resonates deeply with adult readers as well as children. At the core of this is the theme of loneliness, and many books deal with the process of overcoming this loneliness and healing, either on their own or with others. In an age of content overload, readers are thirsty for authentic stories. Rather than just entertaining or colorful stories, books that address deep emotions like loneliness and alienation, and help readers examine and heal their own wounds, are expected to be more popular in the future. As the publishing industry adapts to these changes, it will become even more important to develop content that deeply resonates with readers' emotions and lives, rather than simply pursuing popularity.
